Catching up with, The Assist

After a great year playing Y Not Festival, as well as support slots alongside Blossoms and Ratboy, and even a full UK Tour – we catch up with the boys from The Assist to talk about their latest release and their time at RML Studios…

Hey guys! Tell us a bit about yourselves!

We are The Assist, consisting of four members, we intertwine funky slap bass with sharp edgy guitar riffs alongside fierce punchy drums. Our sound is delivered with an aggressive “rap-like” vocal which has a tendency to drift into the most gripping sing along choruses.

For those that are new to your music, describe your sound in three words…

FunkySexyMagic, describe our music perfectly.

Tell us more about this week’s featured track, ‘Tell Her How You Feel’, how did it come about?

The single was written with the hopes of encouraging  people to be more open about how they feel. It was once a necessity that we went out and socialised with our friends and loved ones. A love story was never written over email.

The song itself came to life over summer, written acoustically in the back garden with my brother. A verse riff was set and vocal melody was layered too. We were stuck for a chorus for a short while but after playing it over a few times I came up with the vocal hooks.

What about your time at RML? What made you choose us?

RML is such a chilled environment to work in and our relationship with Ryan has blossomed since day one. He has taught us so much with regards to production of a track, and how big we, as a four piece, can actually sound. His ideas can really take a track to that next level. Not to forget there is also a cracking jacket spud stand only down the road which has a massive part to play in our studio choice, haha!

Are you playing any gigs soon? Where can people catch you?

We are going to have some fun over Christmas with releases and writing some new tunes. We have shows planned for January at the Slade Rooms with the BBC which will be streamed live. We will also go on tour around March time, but until then we will be working hard on all sorts of new funky material to share!

And finally, Oasis or Blur?

Blur.

That’s great lads, cheers! You can stream The Assist’s latest release on our Soundcloud right now!

Be sure to check out their Facebook page for the latest updates!
